Cllr Marc Ramsbottom at the site in Castlefield, where property developers have started work. Trees have been chopped down and ugly wooden hoardings gone up as the land owners appear to be starting work on erecting 45 flats they got permission for from Town Hall planners back in 2002.
Local residents are up in arms at recent threats to the historic environment in the Castlefield Conservation area.
The derelict former Quay bar/Club Canteena has been an eyesore for many months, blighted by graffiti, fly tipping and vandalism. City Centre Lib Dem Councillor Marc Ramsbottom, has forced Town Hall bosses to take action against the owners of the site, who have finally made it secure and cleaned it up.
Now residents are furious at trees being chopped down and unsightly hoarding's that have gone up on green space near to the derelict Jackson Wharf pub. According to Planning bosses, approval was given to build 45 flats on this privately owned land back in 2002.
"The Council are neglecting this important and historic area. They are on the side property developers, rather than of local residents and are not doing enough to protect our historic environment", said Cllr Ramsbottom.
Cllr Ramsbottom has written to Planning bosses urging action to protect Castlefield Conservation area and do more to tackle blight and neglect.
