Nearly £4m of city centre cash remains unspent
Almost £4 million of cash allocated for environmental improvements that would benefit the city centre remains unspent after almost 5 years, according to official reports from Town Hall Planning bosses.
The cash, known as a section 106 agreement, is paid by property developers to the City Council as part of a deal for getting planning permission, and should be spent on environment improvements and other improvements in the city centre.
The figures were finally released by Town Hall bosses after Freedom of Information requests according to city centre Cllr Marc Ramsbottom.
"When planning permission is granted, local residents often have to suffer disruption and loss of amenity", said City Centre Lib Dem Cllr Marc Ramsbottom. "This cash is supposed to benefit city centre residents. It is a scandal that so much of it remains unspent and sitting in Council bank accounts".
Liberal Democrats say they are now pushing for some of the money to spent on environmental improvements such as improvements along our canal towpaths as well as safety improvements at some road junctions.
