Members of the English Defence League hurling abuse in Birmingham earlier in September
City Centre Lib Dem Councillor Marc Ramsbottom has hit out at plans by the racist group the English Defence League (EDL) to stage a demonstration in Manchester. Recent disturbance in Birmingham and London resulted in clashes between the group and anti racist protesters, with 90 arrests. Skinheads have raised Nazi salutes and other EDL supporters have chanted racist slogans. Many have open links to the BNP and other far right groups.
"Racist groups such as the EDL are not welcome in Manchester city centre", said Cllr Ramsbottom. "We are proud of our multi cultural city which welcomes different people from all over the world how have made Manchester their home. We don;t want trouble makers coming here and causing trouble and grief in our city centre. They are not welcome".
He has had meetings with senior police chiefs to try and stop the group. Police have no powers to stop them coming to Manchester, but are keen to ensure proper steps are taken to cause minimum disruption.
