Plans for a campus to bring together civil service departments in Manchester have been unveiled by the Town Hall.
City Centre Lib Dem Councillor Marc Ramsbottom has welcomed outline plans by the government to create a new 'civil service of the North' close to Piccadilly station.
The announcement last week will bring a potential 5,000 new jobs to Manchester to the 20 acre Mayfield site - derelict land and buildings bounded by the Mancunian Way and Fairfield Street.
"Liberal Democrats have argued for a long time that more should be done to relocate the civil service and other big government departments out of Whitehall, so this is good news for Manchester as well as the wide area", said Cllr Ramsbottom.
Town Hall planning bosses will need to look carefully at how to develop the area which has typically felt disconnected from the city centre.
Marc added, "This makes the need to redeveloped London Rd Fire station even more of a priority. We also need to make sure that any development is sustainable with high quality development and public realm, and provides a real opportunity for local jobs for local people".
