Money down the drain: Nearly 10% of council tax cash remains uncollected - the worst collection rate in England
Manchester has more uncollected council tax than anywhere in England according to government figures. Almost 10% of council tax owed to the Labour-run town hall went unpaid in 2009/10 a new government league table showed. That is the greatest percentage of cash written off by any authority in England.
City officials collected £110.5m of the £121.6m owed to them by residents, which is equivalent to 90.9% according to figures from the Department for Communities. The national average was 97.1%.
City Centre Lib Dem Councillor Marc Ramsbottom criticised the council's Labour leadership, labelling them 'incompetent'.
"City centre residents, who pay more in Council Tax than any other ward in the city, have been let down by Labour's reckless management of town hall finances over many years", he said.
